Save the Library!

So I did my video on how people in my hometown can save our library from closing at the November second election. Well, the assignment isn't due until the ninth, but I still had to get it done so that it could actually teach people about how to save the library! Anyway, for some reason it exported really oddly into Quicktime, so I'll have to work on that. I still want to improve it for my class, but I have it mostly done, which is a relief. Hope you like it!

  1. Hey Kim!
I really like the topic of your video - it seems like something that you're pretty passionate about and it's for a cause. I think the color scheme and graphic style with the handwritten text fits well too. The transitions are working well and all seem pretty smooth. Your intro is kind of humorous, which I like.
Around the 0:12 second marker, your house graphic switches to a different graphic, which I think you meant to be the outline of the city of Troy. I think that if there is someway that you could make that more reference a city it might work better, and if that wasn't your intention, I guess it's something to think about.
I like how when you are talking about the money you use a graphic of a money bag, but in the transition the screen gets kind of blank when you zoom in on the money bag, maybe to emphasize the amount of money you could actually write the amount on the bag? That's just one suggestion but I think doing something like that would give the viewer something to look at. Or maybe have the bag fad away instead of zooming in for the transition.
At the 1:34 minute marker the "yes" and "no" get cut off at the top, I'm not sure if that's because of exporting issues, but it's something to double check before the video is finalized.
Another thing is, I guess I don't really understand the reference to the water that you are using, it doesn't at all bother me though, I like it, but I'm not sure why you used it.
Another thing I noticed, was when you have the four "25%" boxes flowing down the water, the middle two don't flow up and down like the outside one do. I think it would look more cohesive if they all moved.
Another suggestion I have to make the ending a little bit more exciting is maybe have some people coming in and out of the library? It would go with the voice over and how you talk about how it will be open for us and future residents to enjoy.
Overall, nice work and the voice over sounds really good (story and quality)!

  2. Nice piece! This is a great topic for the assignment. I like the hand drawn imagery and typography, it is friendly, like a library. You did a very nice job with the voiceover. The voice is clear and easy to hear and syncs up well with the graphics.

    Some things to consider...
I wish that at the beginning there was a title or some indicator about the content/message of the piece. You start by talking about property taxes and such and it is not quickly realized by the viewer what the message is.

There is a random line that remains on the screen for awhile, I noticed it during the ballot part. Could be related to quicktime issues.

Also, I understand that Proposal 1 is important to vote yes on, but you mention Proposals 2, 3, and 4 and I'm curious about what those proposals entail, and if I'm someone that's wanting to help the library, how should I vote on those?

    All in all, nice work!

  3. I like your topic, it was very interesting. I had no idea any of that was going on, so it was nice to be informed. The voice and images flowed very nice, however their were fragments of some of the images that stayed behind when i think they were suppose to leave the scene, i am not sure if that was a exporting issue but it was a little distracting in your movie posted here. I also think that it could have been a little more bold! I think it is awesome you did your own illustration but I just think the colors could have been bolder and stood out a little more. I sound was good, didn't echo at all, nice job on that. Overall it was a nice piece.
