Work in Progress...

For my current assignment in Color Photography, I have already shot a few images. However, I think I need to re-shoot the couch photos, because the image are incredibly grainy.

For the photo of my friend in the horns, this was just a snapshot that I took of my friend that I think came out really nicely. To be honest, I pretty much want to completely reshoot. I love photographing people, the only issue is the time where me and the model are available. I have a feeling I'll be turning in several self-portraits for this assignment.

  1. The photos on the couch are very strong photos and I think could make a strong theme or series.

  2. I think the first image on the couch is the strongest. It seems to have a dream-like feel. Attention is drawn to you as the subject, because you break up the symmetry of the background.

  3. The close up portrait is framed great! I really like the off set where the subject dominates the right hand side of the frame. The third couch photo is my favorite, it gives me a feeling of morning sun and I like the fall off of light you get with it.

  4. The color scheme on your couch shots rule. The contrast of color vs. the lack on contrast in value gives the photos a very soft feel, which makes sense with the concept of sleep. It would be interesting to see you go back and bracket the image. It might ruin the feeling, but on the other hand, what have you got to lose? Experiment!

  5. I think the bottom one is the strongest of the top and bottom.

  6. I like the third image the best. And I actually like the grainy look to it. Between that and the lighting, it really feels like an old photograph to me, someone being comfortable in their sweater with a blanket on the couch, it gives me a warm, home feeling. I do like the cropping of the second and third images better than the full body in the first, so maybe try different angles or cropping at different points on the body.

  7. I feel as though the last image is more effective because the addition of the highlight/flaring lens to bring out the edge of the subject is a well placed addition and calls out the subject better than the one above.

Overall, I really find your photo effects in these to be visually appealing with what looks to be a slight desaturation and soft tonal values throughout. I say that you are definitely heading in the right direction.

  8. couch images are almost there. the light, color, body language, mood, composition is all working well. can you reshoot with a lower ISO to reduce noise? can you try to reduce now? of the three, i like the inclusion of the legs in the first image and the bright light in the third. i think it feels dreamy and sleepy and would love to see the two aspects of these combined. i cant decide how i feel about the plant shooting up from behind the couch... i like the inclusion of the doll because it suggests childhood and adulthood at the same time.

  9. I think the lighting and the color of the 3 sleeping poses are fantastic but there seems to be a lot of color noise in the photos. I dont know if they were different exposures but I would (in camera raw) play with the luminance and color noise sliders to get rid of some of that. Or do a noise reduction in photoshop.

I love the lighting but I also think it looks rather unnatural in the first. I would continue to play with it. I think you did it best with the lighting in the third shot (the first shot the couch really seems to be glowing.) But I like the composition of the first shot best.

  10. In the first sleeping picture, I really like the way the light plays on the blanket- this strong red color is really intense and dramatic. The window also looks the most strong in this image. It's a really beautiful view and makes an interesting background. However, it looks like too much extra light was added in to the couch, which seems to be emitting its own light in this image. This should be toned down a bit, because while "haunted couch" is something that sounds like an insanely fun inspiration, it does not fit in well with these.

At first glance I liked the ray of sun idea on the last one, but the more I look at it the more unnatural it looks and it starts to bother me. The transition between it and the darker part of the couch is too harsh.
